Is phosphated distarch phosphate harmful?

In 2017 EFSA re-evaluated 12 modified starches, including E1413. It concluded that there is no safety concern at the reported uses and use levels for the general population and no need for a numerical ADI. At the 95th percentile (brand-loyal scenario), combined intake of E1404–E1451 was up to 3,053 mg/kg body weight a day, in toddlers.

Can children and pregnant women have E1413?

In 2017 EFSA concluded that the available data did not allow an adequate assessment of the safety of E1413 in dietary foods for babies and young children for special medical purposes (category 13.1.5.2) at the maximum level then authorised, 50,000 mg/kg. EFSA noted that children eating these foods may be more susceptible to gastrointestinal effects because of their underlying medical condition. The source says nothing specific about pregnant women. If you have a particular health condition, ask a doctor.
