Questions about acetylated starch

What is E1420 (acetylated starch)?

Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT (Appendix 1) lists INS 1420 with the functions: emulsifier, stabilizer, thickener.

Is starch acetate harmful?

In 2017 EFSA re-evaluated 12 modified starches, including E1420. It concluded that there is no safety concern at the reported uses and use levels for the general population and no need for a numerical ADI. At the 95th percentile (brand-loyal scenario), combined intake of E1404–E1451 was up to 3,053 mg/kg body weight a day, in toddlers.

Is acetylated starch permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Starch acetate (INS 1420) is listed in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food.

Can children and pregnant women have E1420?

In 2017 EFSA concluded that the available data did not allow an adequate assessment of the safety of E1420 in dietary foods for babies and young children for special medical purposes (category 13.1.5.2) at the maximum level then authorised, 50,000 mg/kg. EFSA noted that children eating these foods may be more susceptible to gastrointestinal effects because of their underlying medical condition. The source says nothing specific about pregnant women. If you have a particular health condition, ask a doctor.
