What is E969 (advantame)?
E969 is advantame. Open Food Facts data places it in the class sweetener.
E969 is advantame (INS 969). Open Food Facts data places it in the class sweetener. It has no row in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, but it is still permitted under Article 5.5 of the Circular, because INS 969 is listed in Table 1 of the Codex GSFA.
Wheat flour, vegetable oil, salt, sugar, sweetener (969), dried onion and garlic, pepper, natural colour (160a).

In 2013 EFSA set an ADI of 5 mg/kg body weight per day for advantame, based on a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 500 mg/kg body weight per day in rabbits and a 100-fold uncertainty factor. EFSA concluded that advantame would not be of safety concern at the proposed uses and use levels as a sweetener; conservative exposure estimates for high-level adult and child consumers were below the ADI. JECFA (2013) also set an ADI of 0–5 mg/kg body weight.
Yes, under Article 5.5 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT. Appendix 1 of this Circular (consolidated text 09/VBHN-BYT) has no row with INS 969, and neither does Appendix 2B. But Article 5.5 (added by Circular 17/2023/TT-BYT) provides that Appendices 2A and 3 are updated to follow Tables 1 and 3 of the latest Codex GSFA. INS 969 is listed in Table 1 of the GSFA (revisions through 2026). For the specific food categories and use levels, see Table 1 of the GSFA.
According to EFSA (2013), the phenylalanine exposure expected from advantame used as a general-purpose sweetener was of no safety concern for healthy consumers, adults and children. For a child with phenylketonuria, the additional phenylalanine intake from foods and drinks containing advantame would be a relatively small increment. The source says nothing specific about pregnant women. If you have a particular health condition, ask a doctor.
