Questions about invertase

What is E1103 (invertase)?

E1103 is invertase. Open Food Facts data places it in the class stabiliser.

Is invertase harmful?

In 2001 JECFA (the FAO/WHO expert committee) gave invertase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (INS 1103) an ADI of “not specified” (no numerical ADI is needed), because S. cerevisiae is commonly used in the preparation of food; JECFA stated that its use should be limited by good manufacturing practice (GMP). This is a JECFA evaluation, not an EFSA opinion or the current EU rule.

Is E1103 permitted in Vietnam?

It was not found. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT (consolidated text 09/VBHN-BYT), the list of additives permitted in food, has no row with INS 1103, and neither does Appendix 2B.
