Questions about steviol glycosides

What is E960 (steviol glycosides)?

E960 is steviol glycosides. In Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT the functions listed for it are sweetener.

Is steviol glycosides harmful?

In 2024 EFSA assessed a request to raise the ADI of steviol glycosides (E 960a–d) and concluded that there is insufficient justification to increase the current ADI of 4 mg/kg body weight per day, expressed as steviol equivalents. For the proposed extension of use and higher maximum levels, EFSA concluded that the calculated dietary exposure would result in an increased exceedance of the ADI for toddlers at the 95th percentile.

Is E960 permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Steviol glycosides (INS 960a, 960b(i)) is listed in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food.

Can children and pregnant women have E960?

EFSA and JECFA both looked at young children separately. EFSA (2024) concluded that, for the proposed extension of use and higher maximum levels, the calculated dietary exposure would increase the exceedance of the ADI (4 mg/kg body weight per day, as steviol equivalents) for toddlers at the 95th percentile. JECFA (2026) noted that the exposure of high-consuming children in the EU, up to 4.8 mg/kg, exceeded the upper bound of the ADI, but concluded that the estimated exposures are not likely to present a health concern for any age group. The sources say nothing specific about pregnant women. If you have a particular health condition, ask a doctor.
