Questions about potassium citrates

What is E332 (potassium citrates)?

They are the potassium citrates, the potassium salts of citric acid (E330): potassium dihydrogen citrate and tripotassium citrate. Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists E332 as a stabilizer, acidity regulator, emulsifying salt and sequestrant.

Is tripotassium citrate harmful?

The JECFA database (the FAO/WHO expert committee) records an ADI of “not limited” for tripotassium citrate, set in 1973.

Is INS 332 permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Potassium dihydrogen citrate (INS 332(i)) and tripotassium citrate (INS 332(ii)) are listed in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food, as stabilisers, acidity regulators, emulsifying salts and sequestrants.

Can children and pregnant women have E332?

Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT permits potassium dihydrogen citrate and tripotassium citrate at good manufacturing practice in infant formula for children up to 12 months, in follow-on formula for children aged 6–36 months and in formula for special medical purposes for children up to 12 months (ready-to-eat products only), and in complementary foods for children up to 36 months (excluding products covered by Codex stan 73-1981). The text does not mention pregnant women separately.
