What is E330 (citric acid)?

It is citric acid. Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists E330 as an acidity regulator, antioxidant, sequestrant and colour retention agent.

Is citric acid harmful?

The JECFA database (the FAO/WHO expert committee) records an ADI of “not limited” for citric acid, a group ADI for citric acid and its calcium, potassium, sodium and ammonium salts, set in 1973; in 2014 JECFA considered it for specifications only.

Is INS 330 permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Citric acid (INS 330) is listed in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food, as an acidity regulator, antioxidant, sequestrant and colour retention agent.

Can children and pregnant women have E330?

Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT permits citric acid at good manufacturing practice in infant formula for children up to 12 months, in follow-on formula for children aged 6–36 months and in formula for special medical purposes for children up to 12 months (ready-to-eat products only), and in complementary foods for children up to 36 months at a maximum of 5000 mg/kg. The text does not mention pregnant women separately.
