Questions about Acesulfame K

What is E950 (Acesulfame K)?

Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists the function of Acesulfame K (INS 950) as: sweetener, flavour enhancer.

Is acesulfame K harmful?

In 2025 EFSA set an ADI of 15 mg/kg body weight per day for acesulfame K, replacing the ADI of 9 mg/kg set by the SCF in 2000. The 95th-percentile intake estimates were generally below the ADI in all population groups, and EFSA concluded there is no safety concern at the reported uses and use levels. The main contributors to intake are flavoured drinks and sauces.

Is E950 permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Acesulfame K (INS 950) is listed in Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food.

Can children and pregnant women have acesulfame K?

EFSA (2016, quoted in the 2025 opinion) concluded that acesulfame K at up to 9 mg per g of protein, providing 10 g protein per day to children aged 1 to 3, in dietary foods for infants and young children for special medical purposes, would not be of safety concern. For pregnant women, this source contains no separate statement.
