E452Polyphosphates

E452 covers the polyphosphates, salts of phosphoric acid. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists these functions: sequestrant, acidity regulator, emulsifier, emulsifying salt, humectant, raising agent, stabilizer, thickener.

Did you know? Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists five polyphosphate salts under INS 452: sodium, potassium, sodium calcium, calcium and ammonium polyphosphate (452(i)–452(v)).

Risk level on the Yenzo Scalelow?Based on EFSA's scientific assessment, 2019

EFSA (2019) found that intake in children can exceed the ADI. On the Yenzo Scale this finding does not raise the risk level by itself.

Questions about polyphosphates

What is E452 (polyphosphates)?

E452 covers the polyphosphates, salts of phosphoric acid. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists these functions: sequestrant, acidity regulator, emulsifier, emulsifying salt, humectant, raising agent, stabilizer, thickener.

Is polyphosphates harmful?

In 2019 EFSA set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg body weight per day, expressed as phosphorus, for the phosphate additives (E338–E341, E343, E450–E452). EFSA noted that in one estimated scenario intake by infants, toddlers and other children exceeded this ADI.

Is E452 permitted in Vietnam?

Yes. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food, has the entries INS 452(i), 452(ii), 452(iii), 452(iv) and 452(v).
