E450 covers the diphosphates, salts of phosphoric acid. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT lists these functions: emulsifier, acidity regulator, emulsifying salt, humectant, raising agent, sequestrant, stabilizer, thickener, firming agent.
Did you know? EFSA's ADI of 40 mg/kg body weight per day covers phosphorus intake from natural sources in food as well as from additives, because phosphates are both additives and nutrients.

Is diphosphates harmful?
In 2019 EFSA set a group ADI of 40 mg/kg body weight per day, expressed as phosphorus, for the phosphate additives (E338–E341, E343, E450–E452). EFSA noted that in one estimated scenario intake by infants, toddlers and other children exceeded this ADI.
Is E450 permitted in Vietnam?
Yes. Appendix 1 of Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT, the list of additives permitted in food, has the entries INS 450(i), 450(ii), 450(iii), 450(v), 450(vi), 450(vii) and 450(ix).
Can children and pregnant women have diphosphates?
In the EU, Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 lists E450 (diphosphates) in category 13.1.3, processed cereal-based foods and baby foods: at most 5,000 mg/kg (expressed as P2O5) and only for biscuits and rusks. The Regulation has no separate provision for pregnant women. If you have a particular health condition, ask a doctor.
